My name is Mark Parmenter. I was born in 1951 in Indianapolis, IN. I am married to Julie Terrell Parmenter and have been married for 35 years. I have a daughter and two sons. I live in Spencer, IN
I began my career as an artist in high school and further developed it in college. I went to Indiana University for a B.A. in Studio Art then continued my education in the M.F.A program at Indiana State University. I later graduated with a A.S. degree in Laser and Electrooptics Technology from Vincennes University while working as a Associate Professor. I worked in the technolgy department of a major research institute, Battelle Memorial Institute, as a researcher for 4 years then with a fiberoptic specialty Company, Galileo Electro-Optics Corporation for 2 years in management and manufacturing engineering. During this time I did not make much art but found creative outlet's in the R&D work I was doing. I have published two peer reviewed papers and have one patent.
In 1989 we moved back to Indiana from Massachusetts and I opened a bronze casting facility (White River Foundry) to cast my own work and also to cast works of other artists. We were in business for 26 years. I have now retired from the foundry but I continue to make art in the 3-D programs, painting and sculpture commissions. Click HERE to learn more about The White River Foundry.
Any 3-D work I do can be replicated using 3-D printers or routers directly from the files that created the virtual sculpture. Click here for info on this process. This process has enabled me to make detailed presentations of proposed sculpture and then fabricate or cast them using the 3-D digital files. Most of the Virtual sculpture can be made to any size. Contact me if you are interested in commissioning one.
This website contains most of my sculpture work done over the past 25 years. Most of my work has been by commission. The works are not in chronological order. I view this as a show in digital format. I would have placed sculptures in a random manner based on themes instead of timeline. Do not look for patterns because there are none. I seem to place my favorite work first on the page but not necessarily.
Some of the first images in the Sculpture section are of a large project I did for the Church of Scientology in Clearwater Florida. There were over 200 individual pieces and objects in the installation. In all the project took 3 years to complete.
Most of the sculpture have bronze elements, although I also work in wood, stone, glass and a variety of synthetic materials and natural materials.
The Painting is mostly from work I have done in the past two years. Some are traditional flat paintings and some are more like reliefs in that some elements project outward. I use acrylic paints as well as industrial paints and stains.
The Virtual Sculpture was done on two programs. Truespace for the older work (starting in 1994) and Modo for the more recent works. I also use Photoshop and Alchemy. Most of the sculptures I have made i the past 20 years usually start with a 3-D design and this design is then made real using various techniques that include milling foam cores for clay models and stereolithography.
Drawings are from computer generated vector and bitmapped programs or are works on paper.
Side by Side shows the virtual sculpture and the real one. I have tried to make them as close as possible but the program I am using is limiting me to this format.
If you click on an image a slide show is brought up. This is the prefered viewing method as the images are bigger and more detailed.
